The navies of South Korea and France conducted joint training to enhance interoperability and strengthen maritime security cooperation.

On Wednesday, the South Korean Navy’s Operations Command announced that it conducted joint training with the French Navy in waters east of Busan. The exercise included South Korea’s 4,400-ton destroyer Choi Young (DDH-II), a Lynx maritime helicopter, and the French Navy frigate Prairial.

The Prairial is a 2,600-ton frigate measuring 93.5 meters in length, 14 meters in width, and 4.3 meters in height. Prairial refers to the ninth month of the French Republican Calendar, which means meadow month. The two vessels engaged in communication training, tactical maneuvers, and helicopter landing and take-off drills, enhancing interoperability and joint operational capabilities between the South Korean and French navies.

Captain Jang Ik Jeong of the Choi Young, who commanded the exercise, stated, “We were able to share operational expertise and enhance interoperability with the French Navy, which shares the values of freedom and democracy. Based on the tactics and strategies strengthened through this exercise, we will successfully complete our assigned maritime operations missions.”

The Navy’s Operations Command has conducted joint training exercises with allied nations throughout the year, including the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Australia, maintaining a combat-ready posture for maritime operations.
