South Korea’s Naval Operations Command hosted the Defense AI Expansion Program at the Busan Naval Operations Base on Tuesday. The program focused on ways to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) technologies into military operations.
The Defense AI Expansion Program, led by the Ministry of National Defense, is an on-site, unit-specific initiative to enhance service members’ AI application skills. NAVOCOM became the fourth military unit to participate in the program.
The event drew over 400 participants, including members of Naval Operations Command, the Army’s 53rd Infantry Division, the Air Force’s 5th Air Mobility Wing, and civilian defense employees from the Busan area.
The event included key activities such as an introduction to defense AI policies, discussions on AI expansion strategies, an exhibition of AI achievements, and expert-led lectures.
During the briefing, participants learned about defense-generative AI, a technology that integrates AI into defense networks to assist service members with tasks and improve operational efficiency.
The briefing identified areas such as administrative and clerical tasks where AI could enhance efficiency while addressing manpower shortages caused by demographic challenges.
During the AI expansion policy discussion, participants explored the application of AI to improve mission capabilities across personnel, operations, intelligence, and logistics. Special attention was given to testing AI in maritime operations and establishing platforms to collect, store, and manage relevant data for combat readiness.
The exhibition showcased AI advancements in surveillance operations, education and training, and medical support. Participants gained insights into technological developments and discussed ways to adopt these innovations for South Korea’s military needs.
In addition to the exhibition, the program featured expert lectures and unit-specific AI training, providing participants with hands-on learning experiences.
Colonel Jang Jae Hoon, commander of the Communications and Signals Group at NAVOCOM, emphasized the importance of AI, stating, “AI technology is critical to the survival and advancement of our military. Through this program, we aim to enhance our personnel’s awareness and understanding of AI and foster AI talent capable of leading future battlefields.”
