The South Korean Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday that North Korea has provided more than 200 long-range artillery pieces to Russia, which has invaded Ukraine.
In its report submitted to the National Assembly’s Defense Committee, the ministry stated, “North Korea continues to support Russia with weapons and ammunition following the reported deployment of troops to the war in Ukraine,” adding that “under its hardline anti-U.S. strategy, North Korea is engaging in rhetorical criticism and military demonstrations.”
North Korea’s support for Russia reportedly includes over 200 long-range artillery pieces, approximately 11,000 troops, and a significant amount of ammunition. The Defense Ministry assessed that additional support in the form of soldiers, weapons, and ammunition is possible.
This follows an earlier statement by National Security Office Director Shin Won Sik, who, during a television appearance on November 22, 2024, first mentioned North Korea’s provision of long-range artillery to Russia. He stated that “since early October, over 160 artillery pieces have been supplied,” suggesting that further deliveries have occurred since then.
The South Korean Defense Ministry also reported that 2025 marks the final year of North Korea’s five-year defense development plan. With Russian support, North Korea is expected to focus on enhancing its nuclear and missile capabilities while modernizing its conventional forces. The ministry further stated that it is closely monitoring the possibility of Russia transferring advanced military technologies to North Korea in return for its support, including intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) reentry capabilities and nuclear submarine technology.
Additionally, the ministry noted that North Korea has not responded to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent friendly remarks about Kim Jong Un. Instead, it has publicly conducted missile tests and showcased Kim Jong Un’s visits to nuclear facilities. The Defense Ministry assessed these actions as part of North Korea’s efforts to create a favorable environment for potential future negotiations with the U.S.
Meanwhile, regarding South Korea, the ministry reported that North Korea is closely observing the country’s political situation while continuing its GPS jamming operations against the South.
