On Monday, General Kim Myung Soo, Chairman of South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), met with General Romeo S. Brawner Jr., Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, to discuss the security situation in the Indo-Pacific region and ways to enhance military cooperation between the two countries.

This meeting marked the first time in six years that the top military leaders of South Korea and the Philippines met, following their last encounter in 2019. Since signing a defense cooperation Memorandum of Understanding in 2013, the two nations have continued high-level exchanges and sustained military cooperation.

Following an official welcoming ceremony at the Ministry of National Defense parade grounds, Generals Kim and Brawner discussed shared perspectives and measures to strengthen bilateral cooperation for regional security. General Kim emphasized that the Philippines is not only a comrade-in-arms who fought alongside South Korea during the Korean War for freedom and peace but also a like-minded country that shares democratic values. He stressed the importance of expanding military cooperation between the two nations to promote global freedom, peace, and prosperity.

General Brawner’s visit to the JCS headquarters was scheduled with his participation in the delivery and launching ceremony for the Philippine Navy’s first and second patrol vessels, to be held in Ulsan on March 27. Both leaders agreed to continue expanding cooperation in the military and defense industries while maintaining momentum toward elevating the bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership in October 2024 to strengthen overall defense capabilities.
