The Republic of Korea (ROK) Army’s 1st Infantry Division Ssangyong Brigade carried out an intensive live-fire exercise using surveillance assets and high-mobility firepower.
On June 19, the brigade conducted a combined arms live-fire drill during its combat staff training at the Mugeon-ri Range in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. The exercise integrated maneuver and fire operations and involved approximately 350 personnel from the brigade and attached/support units, along with 80 pieces of equipment, including battalion-level unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), K1E1 tanks, and K105A1 wheeled self-propelled howitzers.
The training involved striking targets designated by the command post using real-time video feeds from key surveillance assets. The brigade operated UAVs along major enemy approach routes, sharing and analyzing collected intelligence in real time. This enabled immediate strikes, implementing a sensor-to-shooter system that links surveillance and precision fire capabilities.
During the combined arms live-fire session, the brigade also conducted live mortar and machine gun firing to enhance proficiency in the use of crew-served weapons.
Major Kwon Dong Geun, the brigade’s operations officer, emphasized that the focus was not on each unit firing independently, but on organically linking the process from situational awareness to target engagement. He added that the brigade will continue to strengthen its mission capabilities to respond swiftly to changes in the operational environment.
