General Jennie Carignan assumed leadership of the Canadian Armed Forces. She visited the War Memorial of Korea in Yongsan District, Seoul, to honor the sacrifice of Canadian soldiers who fought in the Korean War and to review their contributions.
According to the Korea War-memorial Organization, Carignan visited the memorial last Saturday along with Lieutenant General Derek MacAulay, Deputy Commander of the United Nations Command, and Tamara Mawhinney, Canadian Ambassador to South Korea.
General Carignan laid a wreath at the Canadian Fallen Soldiers’ Monument and met with Baek Seung Joo, Chairman of the Korea War Memorial Organization. She then toured the Korean War exhibition hall, which features displays of Canadian participation and efforts during the war. The monument bears the names of 516 Canadian soldiers who died in the Korean War. During the conflict, Canada dispatched 26,791 personnel. In addition to those killed in action, 1,212 were wounded.
Chairman Baek noted that Canada played a key role in Korea’s modernization during the Korean War and through sustained exchanges before and after the conflict.
General Carignan said that Canada and Korea are countries that have shared a long friendship and painful history. She added that the Korean War monuments at the War Memorial deeply moved her, and she is grateful that Canadian veterans are being honored there.
