The Republic of Korea Air Force’s 18th Fighter Wing (18th FW) conducted a joint comprehensive chemical, biological, and radiological (CBR) training exercise on May 21 in coordination with the Army and Navy.
The training aimed to strengthen the joint CBR response capabilities of the three armed services and identify potential constraints in rapid deployment within the base during a large-scale CBR scenario in wartime. The Army’s 23rd Security Brigade and the Navy’s First Fleet Command also participated.
The exercise began with an air raid alert simulating an enemy ballistic missile (TBM) strike, followed by a scenario involving contamination from a nerve agent (VX).
In response to the simulated situation, service members used KM8K2 automatic chemical detectors to identify the type of agent and contamination zones while operating decontamination stations for equipment and personnel. Contaminated areas were decontaminated using CBR reconnaissance vehicles and K10 decontamination vehicles.
Captain Kim Sung Hoon, commander of the CBR support unit who led the exercise, stated that the joint training significantly improved the wing’s ability to respond to large-scale CBR attacks. He added that continued joint CBR training will ensure the base’s survivability.
