Lockheed’s F-35 Links Up With Allies for Real-Time Battle Success

BEMIL Views

In collaboration with the Royal Netherlands Air Force, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works successfully shared classified data in real time between an in-flight F-35 and the Dutch command and control (C2) system Keystone during the Ramstein Flag multi-domain operations exercise. This marks the first instance of classified data sharing outside the United States.

In this live exercise, the Royal Netherlands Air Force’s F-35 detected and identified multiple ground targets in an Anti-Access/Area Denial (A2/AD) environment. The collected data was transmitted via the Multifunction Advanced Datalink (MADL) to Skunk Works’ Open Systems Gateway (OSG), which was relayed to Keystone. Keystone sent the data to ground-based rocket artillery units, which successfully struck the targets, completing the entire operation within minutes. This represents the first proven example of real-time F-35 interoperability between allies and a major advancement in multi-domain integration.

The Skunk Works OSG enables precise target data collected by the F-35 to be transmitted to allied air and missile defense systems, enhancing the ability to detect, track, and neutralize threats. This improved situational awareness and interoperability allow coalition forces to respond more swiftly and decisively, further strengthening collective defense postures among allied and partner nations.

Air Commodore Bert ‘Vida’ de Smit of the RNLAF stated that Ramstein Flag was a highly successful exercise demonstrating close cooperation between the United States Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa (USAFE-AFAFRICA) and Skunk Works. He expressed strong satisfaction with the results and affirmed a continued commitment to drive innovation and further develop integrated battlefield capabilities through collaboration with partners.

OJ Sanchez, Vice President and General Manager of Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, remarked that the combined joint all-domain capabilities demonstrated at Ramstein Flag showcase how the F-35 can seamlessly integrate with international partners’ command and control systems. He noted that this represents a significant turning point in multi-domain operations and highlights the strong partnership between USAFE-AFAFRICA and the Royal Netherlands Air Force. Sanchez added that Lockheed Martin is committed to rapidly delivering innovative multi-domain operational capabilities that maximize allied F-35 fleet effectiveness and support peace through strength.

Meanwhile, Lockheed Martin Skunk Works continues investing in open architecture solutions to strengthen multi-domain integration capabilities among allied nations.
