On Wednesday, the Republic of Korea Air Force’s 15th Special Mission Wing (15th Wing) conducted a live-fire exercise using the 30mm Cheonho wheeled anti-aircraft gun to enhance its response capabilities against low-altitude drones and small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The training was held at the Machajin anti-aircraft firing range in Goseong, Gangwon Province, with safety prioritized and an emphasis on mastering basic firing procedures for operational personnel. First introduced to the Air Force in May 2024, the Cheonho is a next-generation air defense system developed with domestic technology. It boasts significantly improved accuracy over the older Vulcan system and features rapid mobility.

In particular, the system is integrated with the air base’s anti-aircraft fire control system, enabling real-time early warning against aerial threats. It also utilizes an electro-optical tracking system (EOTS) to track targets day or night without limitations.

The 15th Wing plans to continue conducting realistic field training exercises using all available forces to ensure immediate on-site response capability in the event of a contingency.

Captain Jeong Yo Han, commander of the air defense unit, noted that recent warfare trends show increasing threats not only from aircraft but also from small UAVs. He emphasized that the Cheonho system offers vastly superior performance compared to the Vulcan and added that this live-fire exercise would provide practical experience in responding to airborne threats.
