On Wednesday, the 1st Marine Division solidified its air defense posture by firing 2,000 rounds from 20mm Vulcan cannons at the Chilpo Anti-Aircraft Firing Range in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province. The training enhanced realism by incorporating an unmanned training target (FB).
The training involved around 20 soldiers from the division’s air defense unit and two Vulcan cannons. Its aim was to improve soldiers’ abilities to track and engage aerial targets.
The training began with an unmanned drone carrying a target sheet, which appeared about 1 km offshore. Operating the Vulcan cannons, the soldiers detected and tracked the target, firing upon receiving the signal. They honed their skills in safely engaging and shooting down aerial targets.
The unit dedicated two weeks to preparing for the training, practicing Vulcan firing procedures with tracking systems, and assessing transportation personnel’s towing capabilities for equipment mobility.
Looking ahead, the unit plans to conduct additional training exercises, including Shingung missile firing drills, to enhance proficiency with crew-served weapons and prepare for a range of aerial threats.
Major Son Chang Hee, head of the air defense unit, remarked, “With the current security situation being critical and air threats increasing in various forms, we will establish an airtight air defense posture to counter enemy provocations through thorough training.”
