The Republic of Korea Army’s 6th Infantry Division held a ceremony on Thursday at its headquarters to commemorate the 74th anniversary of its advance to the Amnok River.
The event was organized to honor the division’s victory at the Battle of Chosan on October 26, 1950, when it became the first among South Korean and UN forces to reach the Korea-Manchuria border.
Around 200 people attended, including members of veterans’ organizations from Cheorwon County, Gangwon Province, the Korean Veterans Association, the Cheongseong Comrades Association, the Pyeonganbuk-do Provincial Association, and local government officials. The event featured a salute to fallen heroes, a rifle salute, a moment of silence, floral offerings and incense burning, a briefing on the battle’s history, a water dedication from the Amnok River, and the singing of the division song.
The highlight of the ceremony was a reenactment of a symbolic moment during the Korean War when the 1st Battalion of the 7th Regiment reached the Amnok River and planted the South Korean flag. Current battalion soldiers recreated the scene of offering water from the Amnok River to the Korean people.
In his commemorative address, Division Commander Major General Kim Jin Seong stated, “The peace and prosperity we enjoy today were not freely given but earned through the noble sacrifices of our predecessors.” He pledged, “We vow to stand at the forefront in defense of our homeland so that the day may come when we again taste the water of the Amnok River.”
