South Korea Plans Tank-Mounted Drone Jammers to Fight Kamikaze Threats

The South Korean military will develop an indigenous tank-mounted jammer to neutralize kamikaze drones through a rapid acquisition program, aiming for field deployment by 2028.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) announced on Tuesday that it had selected the “Intelligent Electronic Warfare-Based Anti-Drone Response System” as a target project during a Rapid Demonstration Project Committee meeting held on April 10. The rapid demonstration program is designed to develop prototypes using new technologies within two years to evaluate their potential for military use.

The selected system detects incoming signals from all directions and performs electronic warfare jamming when it identifies a threat signal by automatically emitting radio waves, thereby neutralizing drones.

When mounted on a tank, the jammer can disable conventional drones and fast-approaching kamikaze drones. This disrupts the remote control of enemy drones and interferes with navigation signals, enabling effective defense against drone-based attacks.

The South Korean military expects that, through this rapid demonstration project, individual tanks will be able to neutralize drone attacks using jamming technology.

Han Kyung Ho, Director of Future Capabilities Programs at DAPA, stated, “We hope that the selection of this project marks a critical turning point in rapidly equipping our military with the ability to counter enemy drones effectively. Going forward, we will continue integrating innovative civilian technologies into the military through rapid demonstration projects, thereby advancing national defense science and technology.”

Meanwhile, DAPA plans to initiate the project within 2025, develop prototypes through approximately two years of R&D, and begin trial deployment within the military starting in 2028.
