The South Korean Marine Corps has appointed its first-ever female Senior Master Sergeant in its 75-year history.

On Tuesday, the Marine Corps Education and Training Command held a change of appointment ceremony for the Senior Master Sergeant of the Recruit Training Battalion at the Sang Seung Hall. Lee Ji Ae assumed her new role, making her the first female Senior Master Sergeant in South Korean Marine Corps history.

Lee’s journey in the Marine Corps began in 2003 when she enlisted as the first female non-commissioned officer in Class 283. She has consistently broken barriers throughout her career, serving as the first female squad leader in 2004 and as the first female drill instructor in 2005. With her new appointment as Senior Master Sergeant of the Recruit Training Battalion, she added another first to her title.

Over her 21-year career, Lee has served in various units across the Marine Corps. She performed her duties flawlessly as a drill instructor at the Education and Training Command, an administrative officer in a rifle company in the 2nd Division, and various roles at the Marine Corps Headquarters and its subordinate divisions. As a result, she has received commendations from the Commandant of the Marine Corps, the Chief of Naval Operations, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Minister of National Defense.

In her inaugural address, Lee stated, “I will wholeheartedly support and encourage recruits to transform into true marines with warmth and care. I am committed to fulfilling my duties as Senior Master Sergeant of the Recruit Training Battalion, supporting the dreams of young people aspiring to become outstanding marines.”

Lee concluded her address by expressing pride in shaping the next generation of elite Marines. She vowed to approach her responsibilities humbly, fostering collaboration and open communication with the training instructors and staff who share her mission.
