The South Korean Navy’s 4,400-ton destroyer Wang Geon (DDH-II), the 43rd rotation of the Cheonghae Unit, returned to Jinhae Base on Tuesday after successfully completing its 188-day deployment mission. Comrades and family members welcomed the ship.
The Navy Operations Command held a homecoming ceremony at Jinhae Base on the same day, presided over by Commander Hwang Sun Woo (Vice Admiral).
The Cheonghae Unit 43 departed Jinhae Base on June 20. It carried out maritime security operations in the Gulf of Aden to protect international sea lanes, support safe navigation for passing vessels, and engage in military exchange activities with multinational naval forces.
In particular, the unit participated in anti-piracy operations led by Combined Task Force 151 (CTF-151) to suppress piracy in the Gulf of Aden and strengthen international maritime security cooperation. The unit maintained close communication with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, providing timely updates on suspicious pirate vessels and piracy activity trends to ships transiting the Gulf of Aden. This effort supported the safe navigation of 531 vessels, including South Korean-flagged ships. Furthermore, the unit significantly enhanced its joint operational capabilities through combined training exercises and tactical discussions with multinational naval forces in the Gulf of Aden, improving readiness to collectively address maritime security threats.
