Sailors aboard the 4,400-ton destroyer ROKS Kang Gam Chan (DDH-Ⅱ), currently deployed as part of South Korea’s Cheonghae Unit 44th Contingent, carried out volunteer activities to support children in Africa, exemplifying humanitarian efforts that transcend borders.

On Monday, around 30 members of the Cheonghae Unit visited an orphanage in Djibouti, East Africa, to engage in community service.

The sailors inspected and repaired aging facilities to create a more comfortable living environment for the children. Their volunteer work also included medical assistance and hygiene checks to ensure the children’s well-being. Additionally, they contributed to improving educational conditions by donating school supplies and funds, which they voluntarily collected.

Senior Sergeant Kim Deok Min, a father of two, shared his motivation, stating, “As a parent, I wanted to bring joy and happiness to these children. Seeing how warmly they welcomed our unit made this experience even more rewarding.”

Colonel Kwon Yong Gu, commander of the Cheonghae Unit 44th Contingent, emphasized the significance of the mission, stating, “This volunteer activity was a meaningful opportunity to practice humanitarianism beyond borders. The Cheonghae Unit will continue to extend a helping hand to those in need, fostering solidarity and cooperation through acts of kindness.”
