With the rising importance of drone operations, various Army units are increasingly hosting drone-based competitions.
On Monday, the Army’s 53rd Infantry Division held an award ceremony to honor personnel who achieved excellent results in the recently held drone combat competition.
The division competed on October 24 in the Haeundae District of Busan. The purpose was to enhance drone operators’ mission execution capabilities and skills, aligning with the unique responsibilities of regional defense divisions and recent trends in warfare. Participants included personnel with at least a Class 3 ultralight vehicle operator’s license.
The competition was divided into mission execution abilities and drone piloting skills. Participants were evaluated based on various criteria, including flight preparation, target acquisition, vehicle tracking, flight skills, and emergency procedures.
Lee Joo Heung, a civilian official and commander of the Geumgok-dong reserve company, who achieved the highest score in the technical category, stated, “I am honored to be recognized as the top drone pilot in the Chungnyeol Division. I will strive to share my winning know-how with my comrades to establish our unit as the strongest in drone operations.”
5th Infantry Division Tests Combat Readiness in Tri-Course Challenge
The 5th Infantry Division hosted the first Dronebot Combat Skills Competition on the same day. Approximately 200 soldiers participated in the event, which aimed to enhance real-world combat capabilities using drones, a key technology in modern warfare, and to develop combined manned-unmanned small-unit combat skills.
The competition featured three courses designed to assess drone piloting proficiency. Participants tackled tasks such as navigating around target flags, precision payload drops, executing takeoffs and landings after payload delivery, and successfully engaging simulated targets.
Kim Sang Hoon, the division’s senior advisor who organized the event, remarked, “Observing the Russia-Ukraine conflict made us recognize the critical importance of drones in future battlefields, inspiring us to organize this competition. We will continue offering unwavering support to enhance our soldiers’ combat capabilities, ensuring this event is not a one-time occasion.”
