On Wednesday, the Republic of Korea Air Force’s 38th Fighter Wing (38th FW) conducted a joint chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) training exercise with U.S. forces at the unit’s CBRN training facility.
This exercise was designed to review and improve joint response procedures between South Korean and U.S. forces in a CBRN situation. Approximately 90 personnel participated in the training, including members from the 38th FW, the U.S. Air Force’s 8th Fighter Wing (8th FW), and the U.S. 1st Marine Aircraft Wing.
Gunsan Air Base is a key main operating base (MOB) jointly defended by both nations. In a contingency, highly coordinated teamwork is required to carry out missions effectively. With that in mind, Korean and American service members focused on sharing CBRN response procedures and expertise while strengthening their ability to conduct joint operations.
The training was conducted in the following order: instruction in CBRN procedures, hands-on equipment training, and live gas exposure experience. Troops from both countries trained in realistic scenarios to build their response capabilities in CBRN situations.
Captain Park So Yoon, commander of the 38th FW’s CBRN Support Company, stated, “We strengthened our teamwork through intensive training” and added, “We will continue to enhance our mission capabilities to maximize our joint response system.”
