On Wednesday, Air Force Chief of Staff Lee Young Soo visited a unit under the Missile Defense Command to inspect its readiness and encourage personnel.

The unit that Chief Lee visited operates the surface-to-air guided missile system Cheongung and is tasked with defending the airspace over the Seoul metropolitan area.

Following a briefing on the unit’s surveillance and readiness posture, Chief Lee visited the Cheongung missile launch site to examine response procedures for various types of enemy provocations and assess the missile’s maintenance status.

Chief Lee stated, “North Korea has escalated its provocations, launching several ballistic missiles following the launch of the Hwasong-19 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). They have also raised tensions by constructing anti-tank barriers and earthen walls along the Gyeongui and Donghae Lines that connect the two Koreas.” He emphasized, “You must maintain a vigilant, immediate response posture with a sense of duty, as you are responsible for defending the airspace over the Seoul metropolitan area.”

He also stressed the importance of training for “first-round must-hit success.” He urged, “Train realistically at all times so that, in any emergency, you can protect citizens’ daily lives from any provocation by the enemy.”
