The 44th contingent of the Cheonghae Unit, which is currently conducting anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden, joined the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) under the U.S. Africa Command for the marathon last Sunday.
This joint event was organized to reinforce the U.S.-South Korea alliance and enhance military cooperation between the two nations. Held at the Djibouti base in East Africa, the marathon provided a meaningful opportunity for South Korean and U.S. personnel to run a 5.2-kilometer course together, fostering mutual trust and camaraderie.
Captain Choi Jin Young drew attention by finishing first among all participants with a time of 19 minutes and 2 seconds.
Colonel Kwon Yong Goo, commander of the Cheonghae Unit, described the U.S.-South Korea alliance as more than just military cooperation. He called it a coalition built on shared values and beliefs. He hoped the marathon would serve as a platform for both countries’ troops to deepen their understanding of one another and commit to the alliance’s future.
Brigadier General Justin Kubo, deputy commander of CJTF-HOA, praised the strong collaboration with the Cheonghae Unit, emphasizing that the close U.S.-South Korea partnership plays a vital role in ensuring international peace and stability.
Beyond its primary counter-piracy mission, the Cheonghae Unit continues to engage in various exchange activities, reinforcing its role as a key ally in promoting global peace and security.
