On January 1, 2025, South Korea’s Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Kim Myung Soo (hereafter referred to as Chairman Kim), conducted a readiness check with frontline units via command calls.
○ On the morning of January 1, 2025 (Wednesday), Chairman Kim visited the Combat Control Center at the Joint Chiefs of Staff headquarters, where he chaired a situation assessment meeting. He also conducted command calls with key commanders, including Lieutenant Colonel Jeong Jin Hak, the battalion commander of the 25th Infantry Division’s GOP (General Outpost), Brigadier General (Designate) Kim Seung Han, Director of the Air and Space Operations Center at the Air Force Operations Command, and Marine Colonel Jeong Sung Chan, Commander of the Yeonpyeong Unit guarding the northwestern islands. During these calls, Chairman Kim inspected the readiness posture and reinforced the military’s commitment to national defense.
○ Chairman Kim expressed his gratitude, saying, “Thanks to your efforts, South Korea can welcome a safe and peaceful New Year. I am deeply thankful and reassured by the soldiers diligently fulfilling their duties even in the harsh winter weather.” He added, “We must maintain a flawless operational posture to deter enemy threats, and if provoked, respond decisively to make the enemy regret their actions.”
○ In his New Year’s address, Chairman Kim emphasized priorities such as “establishing overwhelming military readiness, enhancing advanced military capabilities, and fostering an organizational culture that creates greater value for individuals, families, and units.” He urged all personnel to remain steadfast in their mission to defend the nation and protect the lives and property of its citizens throughout the New Year.
