On a Wednesday morning, Kim Myung Soo, Chairman of South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), held a coordination call with Jennie Carignan, Canadian Chief of Defense.

This is the second call between the two leaders, following their first in August last year. During the call, both sides shared assessments of the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and international security. They also agreed to expand cooperation across various sectors to promote peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, the Indo-Pacific region, and the global community.

Kim emphasized that the Korean Peninsula’s security situation and readiness posture remain stable. He also called for Canada’s active interest and support in strengthening military cooperation between the two nations.

Carignan expressed concern over the recent intensification of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, noting that it poses challenges not only to the Korean Peninsula but also to the global community. She stressed that military cooperation between South Korea and Canada is more crucial than ever in such uncertain times.

Canada deployed troops to support South Korea during the Korean War and has maintained friendly and cooperative relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1963. Over the past 60 years, this relationship has deepened and developed in various fields, including its elevation to a strategic partnership in 2014.
