South Korean Army’s 3rd Artillery Brigade

On October 31, the South Korean Army’s 3rd Artillery Brigade showcased its overwhelming firepower combat capabilities with a K9A1 self-propelled artillery shelling exercise at a Yanggu County, Gangwon Province training ground.

The exercise focused on simulating an enemy artillery provocation scenario, emphasizing mission capabilities by firing at detected targets and verifying strike effects in real time.

The training included various detection and surveillance assets, such as the K9A1 self-propelled artillery, counter-battery radar, uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs), and observation teams.

Leveraging counter-battery radar for initial target acquisition, the brigade executed precision strikes. UAVs provided immediate battle damage assessment, enabling follow-up fire missions on the same targets until complete neutralization.

Amid the heightened security situation on the Korean Peninsula, with recent actions such as North Korea’s balloon provocations and the explosion of inter-Korean roads, soldiers strengthened their ability to neutralize the enemy by repeating “fire, assess, and fire” until the targets were destroyed.

Lieutenant Colonel Kwon Dong Hyuk, commander of the Yongpo Battalion, stated, “This exercise allowed us to test our mission execution capabilities with a swift, decisive, and relentless approach, capable of deterring enemy provocations. We will continue systematic training and education to bolster soldiers’ confidence and complete our readiness for counter-fire operations.”
