The Republic of Korea Army’s 2nd Artillery Brigade’s Myeongseong Artillery Battalion has strengthened its readiness to deliver immediate retaliatory fire in the event of enemy provocation through intensive live-fire exercises. On May 29, the battalion conducted a long-range live-fire drill at the artillery training ground in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province. The exercise involved more than 20 pieces of equipment, including six K9 self-propelled howitzers and two K77 fire direction control vehicles, along with approximately 80 troops.
The drill featured high-explosive base bleed (HE-BB) shells, designed to reduce air resistance and strike targets as far as 40 kilometers away. These rounds not only offer extended range but also high precision, enabling accurate fire support at any time and in any location.
The troops successfully hit the target area with all 32 shells fired, demonstrating their capability to strike distant threats accurately. To ensure the success of the drill, the unit conducted thorough pre-training equipment inspections, ammunition checks, and rehearsals of firing procedures. Additional safety measures included community notifications, preventive spraying, wildfire monitoring teams, and accident prevention training led by commanders.
Captain Kim Jun Young, commander of the 3rd Battery, stated that the exercise significantly improved the troops’ real-world proficiency in operating the K9 self-propelled howitzer. He added that the unit will continue to maintain a strong state of readiness to defend the central and eastern frontlines.
