The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) of South Korea announced on Wednesday that it has delivered a Landing Ship Fast-II (LSF-II) simulator, an advanced 3D maneuver training system, to the Navy.

The simulator, handed over to the Navy, is an advanced 3D simulator developed over the past four years through system development and military testing and evaluation. DAPA expects that this simulator will significantly contribute to the success of actual amphibious operations by allowing operators to master the piloting skills of high-speed landing craft more easily.

High-speed landing craft, along with amphibious assault helicopters, are key assets in the three-dimensional maneuver amphibious operations conducted by the Navy and Marine Corps. In March 2023, the third and fourth vessels were delivered to the Navy, and eight are expected to be handed over by 2026.

High-speed landing craft require skilled pilots with expertise comparable to that of aircraft pilots. They must navigate at high speeds while overcoming waves, currents, and wind conditions. To ensure the success of surprise amphibious landings, these craft must be able to transport heavy tanks and numerous landing troops across the sea and land directly on the target shore at speeds of approximately 70 km/h (43 mph).

This newly developed high-speed landing craft simulator is designed based on real-world piloting data. It can precisely simulate all ship maneuvers under various maritime and weather conditions, including rough seas and nighttime operations. Notably, it allows for realistic training, including docking and departing from Dokdo-class amphibious assault ships, conducting long-range, high-speed landing operations, and performing emergency evasive maneuvers.

Shin Hyun Seung, Director of the Naval Ship Project Division at DAPA, stated, “Following the deliveries of the Navy’s maritime patrol aircraft simulator and the Jang Bogo-III submarine simulator, we are pleased to provide the high-speed landing craft simulator, further strengthening the foundation for efficient pilot training. DAPA will continue to enhance combat training environments by incorporating virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to bolster real-world operational capabilities.”
